Today Arches is the only French paper mill still producing fine art and printing papers on a cylinder mould.
Making paper using a cylinder mould produces very high-quality papers similar to handmade paper.
The natural white rough grain 300gsm variant is specially designed for watercolor artists who can rich texture and durability.
Arches Watercolor Paper an inimitable paper of the highest quality and is 100%thick cotton paper, which is perfect for holding watercolors and not letting them bleed through the paper.
The rough surface ensures that brush bristles don’t slip while painting fine details makes it easier achieve the desired effect.
It’s rough grain surface provides a bold, irregular texture that enhances granulation effects, dry brushwork, and expressive washes.
The natural white shade gives paintings a softer, more traditional look, regular grain, obtained by making the paper on a cylinder mould and thanks to the choice of the felt, which impresses its surface onto the sheet.
Arches Watercolor Paper is 100% cotton, made on a traditional cylinder mould (mould-made), ensures exceptional strength, stability, and beautiful handling of watercolors.
That fibers are evenly distributed which makes the paper extremely stable, so it will not warp or stretch when water is applied to it.
They are acid-free, pH-neutral, gelatin-sized, Chlorine Free and air-dried, each sheet is easily removed from the edge -glued pad.
Sheets have two natural deckle edges, two torn deckle edges, and are watermarked and embossed.
Arches Watercolor paper is strong enough to handle multiple washes of color, masking fluid, scrubbing and artist tape without damage to the surface.
Each sheet is permeated with sizing to give each fiber a consistent feel and absorbency.
Printmakers who desire to use this paper for etching/intaglio should note that for the extra-sizing process usually requires soaking overnight or possibly longer to prepare and soften the surface.
Cylinder mould manufacturing is most suitable for making paper that is stable (not liable to be deformed when it is wet), watermarked, with a natural grain and deckle edges.
It is acid free chlorine free and archival quality guaranteeing resistance to aging and yellowing.
It allows superposing of washes and gives it added strength to resist erasing and scratching without tearing or linting.
It also allows paints to be removed, either wet or dry, easily revealing the whiteness of the paper.
Arches Watercolor can absorb a large amount of water with limited deformation.
The grain of a paper is the texture of its surface, which can be of varying degrees of smoothness, the smoothest being satin grain.
Arches papers are known for their smooth, regular grain, obtained by making the paper on a cylinder mould and thanks to the choice of the felt, which impresses its surface onto the sheet.
