A long sought solution to those unintended watercolor brush marks resulting from too much enthusiasm, haste or miscalculation.
Instructions for use:
1. Use the brush when barely damp, not wet.
2. Hold in a nearly vertical orientation and drag gently, but firmly back and forth along its’ long edge. (see photo)
3. Upon first noting the removal of paint, immediately dab the brush several times on a towel (paper, etc) and recommence “erasing”.
4. Rinse after 2 – 3 “erasures”, dab to remove excess wetness and continue.
Caution: too damp a brush and/or too vigorous “erasing” may damage the painting/paper.
For smaller areas, use the edge of the brush in a similar manner. For many smaller areas (“erase” and/or highlights), try using a Shiraz Short Flat, sizes #1 and/or #2.
Our Ultimate’ range of interlocked bristle brushes offer the artist a traditional brush but with double the interlock. We take two equal amounts of best quality Chinese bristle and set them opposite each other so that the natural curve is facing inwards. The bristle is selected in length and size to enable perfect balance. Although labor intensive this gives the artist a hard wearing brush. Traditionally bristle was used by artists who required a strong loaded stroke and not precision marks. If you are looking for a ‘tighter’ brush and one that retains its shape over time then select from our synthetic ranges designed to be crisp and ‘tight’ with a clean edge- for example ‘Ivory’ ‘Evergreen’ & ‘Eclipse’.

These distinctive black lacquer handled brushes with a signature silver band are a water-based artist’s dream! The Black Velvet® series is made with a blend of natural squirrel hair and black synthetics that allows the brush to hold a huge amount of color and release it with perfect control for watercolors, gouache, fluid acrylics, inks and dyes. The bristles are simultaneously soft enough to allow multiple-layer glazing without disturbing previous colors, yet firm enough to lift color with a gentle scrub.
